Casa Pacheco Leão will have “Tea Ceremony” and music on the veranda
Casa Pacheco Leão is going to have another cultural program. On Friday the 25th, the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden is promoting the “Tea Ceremony”, which will show how tea is prepared according to Chinese tradition. The public will be able to taste the drink. The event is free and will take place once a month, always on the last Friday, in two sessions, at 11am and 3pm. There will only be 20 participants at each time. Tickets can be obtained at jbrj.eleventickets.com. The ceremony will be presented by teacher Li Lu and accompanied by music by teacher Gao Chunhan, who will play the Chinese string instrument pipa.
On the following day, Saturday 26th, the program will be musical, with Hugo Pilger on the cello and Tibor Fittel on the accordion. The performance will take place on the Casa's balcony in two sessions, at 11am and 4pm, and is also free of charge.
With a doctorate in music, Pilger is one of the biggest names in classical music in the country. He was awarded the 2018 Music Professionals Prize in the Classical Instrumentalist category and received nominations for the 2012 Latin Grammy (String Quartets - Prelude 21) and the 2021 Latin Grammy (Claudio Santoro: a obra integral para violoncelo e piano). Tibor Fittel has a master's degree in music and is a pianist, accordionist, composer and arranger. He composes symphonic, chamber, theater and film music, working in the world of concert music and dialoguing with popular music, jazz, bossa nova, choro and others. He has played with artists such as Elba Ramalho, Rildo Hora, Robertinho de Recife, Leny Andrade, Carlos Lyra, Claudete Soares, among others.
Casa Pacheco Leão, listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN), was reopened to the public in November last year, after undergoing architectural restoration with funds approved by the Ministry of Culture through the Federal Law for Cultural Incentives (Rouanet Law), sponsored by State Grid Brazil Holding and Banco BOCOM BBM. On the same occasion, the exhibition “Rota do chá́ - botânica, cultura e tradição” was inaugurated, an immersion into the rich cultural tapestry of this drink, exploring its origins, its global journey and its role in building connections between different cultures, especially between Brazil and China. The Rio Botanical Garden is part of this story, as it was the first place in Brazil where the cultivation of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis) was introduced, by Chinese brought by the Portuguese crown especially for this work, at the beginning of the 19th century.
At the House, visitors can see a collection of porcelain and silver tableware used for drinking tea, from 12 different countries and styles, dating back to the 18th century. You can also feel the differences between the various types of the drink, through the subtlety of smell, color and texture of the six original categories from China. The exhibition and cultural program are produced by Dell'Arte.
