Casa Pacheco Leão, in Rio's Botanical Garden, opens its musical program this Saturday (29)
One of the most emblematic historic buildings in Rio de Janeiro's Botanical Garden, the Casa Pacheco Leão will have a musical program starting this Saturday (29/3). The free performances, on the Casa's balcony, will take place once a month, always on Saturdays, in two sessions, at 11am and 3pm. The premiere will be given by the group Discurso Harmônico, a violin duo formed by Roger Ribeiro and Luan Braga. The concert “Tea as a connection - Goust Réunis in dialog” is aligned with the exhibition “Rota do chá́ - botanica, culture and tradition”, on display at the House.
The repertoire includes “Sonata for two violins in F major” by Francesco Geminiani, “Sonata no. 2 in C major” by Teodorico Pedrini, “Second suite for two violins” on themes from Jean-Philippe Rameau's operas, among others. The concert proposes that tea, consumed and appreciated worldwide, is the metaphor that unites cultures, times and feelings, overcoming rivalries and promoting communion between peoples.
“We're going to present a repertoire that goes from the Chinese Baroque, through the European Baroque, to the Brazilian Baroque, sung by a very special and not so obvious protagonist, tea,” says Luan Braga.
Discurso Harmônico brings together a core of experienced professionals from the Brazilian music scene who specialize in the 17th and 18th centuries. The group is flexible in size, ranging from a solo violin performance to a chamber ensemble, adapting to different repertoires and spaces. It is one of the few groups in the country with antique instruments or period replicas in regular activity.
Casa Pacheco Leão, listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN), was reopened to the public in November last year after being closed for eight years. After undergoing architectural restoration, it opened the exhibition “Rota do chá́ - botanica, culture and tradition”, an immersion into the rich cultural tapestry of tea, exploring its origins, its global journey and its role in building connections between different cultures, especially between Brazil and China.
The Rio Botanical Garden is part of this story, as it was the first place in Brazil where the cultivation of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis) was introduced, by Chinese brought by the Portuguese crown especially for this work, at the beginning of the 19th century.
