Botanical Garden Museum hosts Evando Nascimento for meeting on literature and plants
On July 3, the Botanical Garden Museum is promoting another edition of the “Cultivating Ideas” activity, which aims to create a space for dialog between experts and the public interested in topics related to biodiversity and conservation. As part of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden's activities on the occasion of Rio, World Book Capital, the guest this time is writer, essayist and visual artist Evando Nascimento, who will present the lecture “Books, literature & plants”, reflecting on the connections between the plant world and literary creation.
Inspired by his book “O pensamento vegetal: a literatura e as plantas” (Vegetable thought: literature and plants) (Ed. Civilização Brasileira), Evando proposes a sensitive journey through the different layers of this relationship. The presentation begins with a contemporary approach to plant intelligence, based on researchers such as Stefano Mancuso, Francis Hallé and Anthony Trewavas. Next, the author highlights the very plant materiality of the printed book, made of cellulose. Finally, he invites the audience to a poetic reading of authors who broaden the view of the plant in literature: Fernando Pessoa (Alberto Caeiro), Clarice Lispector, Leonardo Fróes, Ana Martins Marques, Edimilson de Almeida Pereira, among others.
The activity includes a lecture with image projections, followed by a chat with the public, and proposes a transversal reflection between art, science and ecology - central themes of the Botanical Garden Museum's activities.
Evando Nascimento was born in Camacã, in the cocoa region of Bahia. He holds a PhD in Science from UFRJ and studied at the Sorbonne and the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS), where he was a student of Sarah Kofman and Jacques Derrida. He did a post-doctorate in Philosophy at the Free University of Berlin and was a professor at the Université Stendhal in Grenoble. He is the author of fiction and essays that have been translated abroad. In 2021, he was one of the curators of the Paraty International Literary Festival (FLIP), with the theme “Nhe'éry: Literature & Plants”. In 2022, he held his first solo exhibition, “Linha alinha: desenhos-escritos, at UERJ”.
