Botanical Garden Museum holds 2nd edition of “Accessible Sunday” with activities accessible to people with disabilities
The program includes adapted tours, creative workshops, and mediation with sign language interpreters.
Following its successful debut in July, the Botanical Garden Museum will hold the second edition of Accessible Sunday on August 31, a monthly program dedicated to increasing the participation of people with disabilities in educational and cultural activities. The event always takes place on the last Sunday of the month, with free admission.
The initiative reaffirms the commitment of the Museum and the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro to a museology focused on diversity and inclusion, offering experiences that consider different forms of perception, mobility, and communication, including people with visual, hearing, intellectual, motor, and neurodivergent disabilities. The activities include resources such as translation into Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), tactile materials, sensory mediations, and strategies that promote the autonomy and protagonism of the participants.
The August edition features two highlights: the “Sensory Cognitive Visit + Sensory Garden and Arboretum,” which invites the public to explore the Museum's exhibitions and then the Arboretum, focusing on the Sensory Garden; and the "Educational Visit: Photography at the Botanical Garden Museum," dedicated to the photographic memories of the JBRJ, guiding visitors through interactive activities and images that record its history. Both activities are translated into Brazilian Sign Language, ensuring full access, interaction, and active participation for deaf or hearing-impaired people.
The Botanical Garden Museum is the result of a partnership between the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, the idg - Institute for Development and Management, and Shell Brazil, the master sponsor of the space. The museum building has access ramps, elevators, and wide doors, ensuring greater mobility for all visitors.
The space also features tactile flooring, which guides visually impaired visitors, as well as tactile maps of each floor and a tactile model of the building. Complementing these resources, the MJB offers a WebApp with accessible content, including texts in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, videos in Brazilian Sign Language, and audio description resources.
