Biodiversity Forum welcomes Marcos Sorrentino to discuss social participation in tackling the environmental crisis

With COP now over, the discussion on ways to tackle the environmental crisis has taken on a new sense of urgency. At the Botanical Garden Museum, the next edition of the Biodiversity Forum will welcome professor and environmentalist Marcos Sorrentino, director of the Department of Environmental Education and Citizenship at the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, on December 11 at 10 a.m.

In his speech, he will delve into the need for Member States to incorporate the centrality of education into their commitments, recognizing that effective policies to address the climate crisis depend on the engagement of all people, in all sectors of society.

It is in this context that Sorrentino presents the concept that “COP is Here!” — an initiative of the Department of Environmental Education and Citizenship that seeks to stimulate, in each territory, assemblies for dialogue on urgent environmental issues, including climate change, desertification, and biodiversity. “Reflecting the voices of diversity, of humans and non-humans, visible and invisible, is a fundamental task in redirecting the paths we have taken that lead to the unviability of human life on this planet,” he says.

Held monthly, the Biodiversity Forum is coordinated by a council of experts from the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute (JBRJ) and promotes debates on essential environmental issues. The activity is broadcast live on the JBRJ YouTube channel and offers a certificate of participation to the public.

The Botanical Garden Museum is sponsored by Shell Brazil and managed by idg - Instituto de Desenvolvimento e Gestão (Institute for Development and Management). Opened in March 2024, the space presents to the public, through exhibitions, interactive content, and cultural programming for all ages, the pioneering work of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute for the knowledge and conservation of Brazilian flora.
