The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden has gained pomegranate (Pudica granatum L.) and grapevine (Vinis vinifera L.) seedlings. The seedlings have been reintroduced into an area of the arboretum called the biblical plant garden, which has received information signs. The biblical garden features plant species mentioned in the Bible, such as the olive tree (Olea europaea L.) and rue (Ruta graveolans L.). The aim is to show visitors some of the plants that are associated with Judeo-Christian traditions.
The biblical garden features seven plant species mentioned in the TEB Bible (Ecumenical Translation of the Bible), the olive tree (Olea europaea L.), rue (Ruta graveolans L.), oleander (Nerium oleander L.), blackberry (Morus nigra L.), pomegranate (Punica granatum L.), citron (Citrus cf medica L.) and grapevine (Vinis vinifera L.).
The plants selected were given nameplates with their scientific and popular names and the respective biblical citation of the books, chapters and verses. The Bible mentions numerous plants used for food, medicine, ornamentation or symbolic purposes.
