Baroque music meets choro at Domingo no Jardim
The duo Choro Antigo, formed by Éire Lavery (accordion) and Carlos Gadelha (viola da gamba), presents the concert “Canários e graúnas: O jardim musical da música barroca e do choro” (Canaries and finches: The musical garden of baroque music and choro), which highlights the points of convergence between these two musical genres. The proposal includes the use of instruments characteristic of each era and a repertoire aligned with the setting of the performance, with works that refer to plants and birds. The performance will take place on November 30 and is part of the Domingo no Jardim series.
The program features pieces by J.S. Bach in dialogue with choros by Dominguinhos, Luiz Gonzaga, and Jacob do Bandolim, as well as compositions by other authors. The recital is narrated, taking the audience on a historical journey between the two musical universes. The performance will feature the participation of opera singer Alessandra Quintes.
Choro Antigo began informally in England, when the two musicians were studying at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Their cultural and musical experiences and shared interest in choro and baroque music drove the emergence of the project.
Éire Lavery is a composer and multi-instrumentalist, with award-winning compositions recognized in England, as well as performances on piano and accordion in plays and presentations of Brazilian music repertoire with the group Street Food.
Carlos Gadelha has a degree in viola da gamba and is dedicated to the study of Baroque and Renaissance music, in addition to his interest in composition and historical improvisation, which led him to conceive this project.
Alessandra Quintes has experience in baroque and Brazilian popular music. She sang in “Dido and Aeneas” at the III Opera Festival of the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro, at the VII Baroque Music Week of OBU & CMBV, Duo Quintes & Lima, and Duo Ricercare.
The performance will take place in front of the bust of Dom João at 11 a.m. In case of rain, it will be moved to the Galpão das Artes. The show is free, with only the arboretum entrance fee charged.
