“The Time of Plants” exhibition explores the history of tea and coffee

Tea and coffee are the protagonists of the exhibition “The Time of Plants.” The exhibition traces the origins of Camellia sinensis in the mountains of southern China and Coffea arabica in the highlands of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sudan, reflecting on the historical connections between Africa, Asia, and Brazil.

Long before becoming global beverages, tea and coffee emerged from specific landscapes, including humid mountains, tropical forests, and lands cultivated by generations of farmers who learned to follow the rhythms of the seasons, rain, and sunlight. Over the centuries, their leaves and seeds crossed oceans, transforming economies, landscapes, and ways of life.

The exhibition brings together more than 200 items, including contemporary artworks, historical documents, botanical illustrations, scientific objects, traditional utensils, photographic records, sensory installations, and audiovisual content.

Admission is free. The exhibition is open from Thursday to Tuesday (closed on Wednesdays), from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Casa Pacheco Leão, Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden – 1008 Jardim Botânico Street.
