In 2023, FUNAG and IPRI launched two series of interviews with renowned specialists from some of the world’s leading institutions, universities, and research centers. The series aim to examine the influence of digital technologies on the shaping of the contemporary world and the present and future challenges for the development of diplomatic activity. The interviews are being conducted in person or online and are published on FUNAG’s social media platforms. The interview material may also serve as the basis for publishing a collection of texts compiling the main ideas and discussions presented in the meetings.

In this series, specialists and academics are invited to reflect on the challenges facing the field of international relations and diplomacy in the 21st century, and on how the Brazilian Foreign Service (Itamaraty) should prepare today to understand and overcome the challenges of the digital era that has only just begun. The exercise proposes to discuss the functioning of diplomacy as a State institution and how diplomats perceive and act in relation to the challenges that foreign ministries will face in the 21st century..

Interviews conducted since 2023:

  • “What is the role of the diplomat in today’s world?” Prof. Dr. Christian Lequesne (Sciences Po), France; MSC Almir Lima Nascimento, IPRI/FUNAG.
  • “Technology and the contemporary world.” Professora Elaine Marcial and Professor Giovanni Okado; Minister Almir Lima Nascimento, IPRI/FUNAG.
  • “The training of diplomats.” Ambassador Kishan S. Rana (Diplofoundation), India; MSC Almir Lima Nascimento, IPRI/FUNAG.
  • “Challenges of foreign ministries and diplomacy in the 21st century.” Ambassador Fernando Mello Barreto; Minister Almir Lima Nascimento, IPRI/FUNAG.
