Presentation: Focus and Scope
Publication of articles written by diplomats that provide information and analysis on contemporary issues on the international agenda, from perspectives relevant to Brazil’s international role and foreign action. This publication initiative should be seen as a contribution by Itamaraty to the production of knowledge and to the public debate on the challenges and directions of Brazilian foreign policy. As each article is the result of an individual research or reflection effort, the concepts and positions expressed therein are the sole responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Brazilian Government. The journal’s project is in no way intended to be exclusionary, and will also be open to articles or essays from sources other than Itamaraty itself.
The public debate on international relations and foreign policy issues has been gaining increasing importance in Brazil, which reflects, on the one hand, the consolidation and deepening of democracy and, on the other, the country’s growing presence on the international stage. In Brazil, the academic production of knowledge in the field of international relations has developed significantly. An increasing number of universities offer undergraduate and graduate programs in this area. The number of dissertations and theses defended each year has multiplied. To this we can add the equally relevant production in related fields such as economics, history, geography, social sciences and political philosophy. As with any “knowledge-intensive” activity, foreign policy benefits from a diversified debate. Diplomats, Brazilian civil society – including universities, research centers and NGOs – as well as other government bodies whose work increasingly encompasses international issues, can all benefit from broader access to the knowledge produced within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs itself. It is, ultimately, a matter of providing an additional channel of access to high-quality information.
Currently, the journal is classified as A4 in CAPES’s unified Qualis system (2019).
From issue 16 onwards, the Cadernos de Política Exterior will also be published in English.
