President of CADE participates in international event on competition law and policy

On 6 July, the president of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), Alexandre Cordeiro, participated in the 21st Session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts (IGE) on Competition Law and Policy carried out at the headquarters of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad), in Geneva, Switzerland.

Mr Cordeiro joined the peer review panel that evaluated the Paraguayan antitrust legislation and enforcement, which determined the establishment of a competition authority in the country in 2013.

The debate also had the participation of representatives of antitrust agencies from the Republic of Korea and Spain. The discussions aimed to identify improvement points in the legal and institutional framework of the Paraguayan authority and contribute to enhancing the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of its competition law and policy based on the experience of other jurisdictions.

As a result, Unctad will prepare a technical assistance project based on the rapporteurs’ notes and recommendations on the peer review to strengthen the Paraguayan competition system.

On 5 July, President Alexandre Cordeiro participated in the meeting regarding the Portuguese-speaking African countries (Palop), which welcomed the representatives of the competition authorities of these jurisdictions to share the Brazilian experience and discuss the priorities and challenges that antitrust authorities currently face.

The Intergovernmental Group of Experts (IGE) on Competition Law and Policy is an agency under the United Nations that aims to promote global cooperation on antitrust and strengthen the implementation of antitrust policies worldwide. Member countries independently decide if they will accept those recommendations, whether via unilateral, bilateral or multilateral agreements, according to their needs and specific circumstances.

The IGE holds meetings annually with experts and government representatives from several countries to discuss the best practices to improve global cooperation for implementing antitrust policies.
