On 12 April, the President of CADE, Mr Alexandre Cordeiro, got nominated to integrate the Antitrust Law Section of the American Bar Association (ABA) as an honorary member. President Cordeiro and other representatives of CADE participated in the 70th Annual Spring Meeting held by the ABA, between 5-8 April, in Washington D.C, USA.

In a report published on 12 April, the ABA Nominating Committee appointed Mr Cordeiro as a Non-U.S. Lawyer Representative for the Antitrust Law Section (which deals with competition advocacy, trade legislation, and consumer protection).

The honorary member occupies a chair with no right to vote for a three-year term (2022-2025). The Canadian competition lawyer Casey Halladay holds the position until August this year.

As an honorary member, Mr Alexandre Cordeiro will be allowed to participate in the Antitrust Law Section meetings and share opinions on hot topics, indicating the recognition of the Brazilian authority within the international antitrust community.

The President of the American Bar Association, Tom Zych, will announce the new Non-U.S. Representative of the Antitrust Law Section during the ABA 2022 Annual Meeting in August based on the Nominating Committee report.

Annual Spring Meeting

In early April, the ABA held its 70th Annual Spring Meeting – the most important event organised by the association and one of the most important forums on antitrust law worldwide. Other representatives of CADE that attended the event were Assistant Superintendent Diogo Thomson; Commissioners Luiz Hoffmann and Lenisa Prado; the Head of the International Unit, Bruna Pamplona, and the Head of the Technical Advisory Unit to the Office of the President, Dario Neto.

President Cordeiro joined the Enforcers Roundtable, the principal panel of the event, attended by nearly three thousand lawyers, which discussed Big Tech and international cooperation in antitrust law. He mentioned the performance of the Brazilian authority involving investigations into digital markets and highlighted its work on international cooperation and the suppression of cartel cases.

The roundtable also had the participation of the President of the FTC, Lina Khan; the Vice-President and Commissioner of the European Commission, Margrethe Vestager; the Assistant Attorney General of the Department of Justice Antitrust Division, Jonathan S. Kanter; and the NAAG Antitrust Task Force Chair and Assistant Attorney General at Wisconsin Department of Justice, Gwendolyn J. Cooley.
