CADE's president accepts position as ICN Vice-Chair

The President of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense - CADE, Vinicius Marques de Carvalho, was nominated on September 4th, Vice-Chair of the International Competition Network - ICN. It is the largest forum of competition authorities in the world, comprising 128 antitrust agencies from 111 jurisdictions. The invitation to take the position was made by the current president of ICN, Andreas Mundt, who is also the president of the German competition authority (Bundeskartellamt).

Mundt was elected at the monthly meeting of the ICN Steering group, held on September 4th, when he formalized the appointment of two Vice-Chairs for the organization. The president of France's antitrust agency (Autorité de la concurrence), Bruno Lasserre, completes the triad leading the international organization. Mundt should stay in the position until April 2015. He was elected chair of the ICN in place of Eduardo Perez Motta, president of the competition authority of Mexico (Comision Federal de Competencia), who was in his second term at the head of the international network when he stepped down.

For the president of Cade, the invitation acknowledges the work of the entire Brazilian System of Competition Defense has developed in recent years. "It represents a confirmation that we are on the right track in relation to the implementation of an effective policy to protect competition in the country."

The ICN was established in 2001 and serves as a stand for the exchange of information aimed at the convergence of rules and practices for competition defense. The organization holds meetings, teleconferences, workshops, and it prepares guides and recommendations for consolidating international best practices. In addition, ICN coordinates actions in the fight against international cartels and in the control of cross-border mergers.

Brazil has an active role within ICN works, through the coordination of working groups, such as the Cartel Working Group. Last year, Brazil hosted the annual ICN conference. The event took place in the city of Rio de Janeiro and attracted more than 500 domestic and foreign participants.
