CADE takes part in international conference on competition defence
The Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) took part in the 24th International Competition Network (ICN) Annual Conference, held from 7 to 9 May in Edinburgh, Scotland. The event is the main global forum aimed at competition defence and gathered more than 140 authorities from 130 jurisdictions, in addition to non-governmental representatives.
During the conference, the participants discussed the main challenges faced by antitrust authorities worldwide, focusing on the role of competition in the promotion of economic growth and the impact of digital transformations in the markets. The agenda of the event also strengthened the dialogue among the network members and promoted good practices for a more coordinated and effective performance in the fight against anticompetitive conducts.
Mr Alexandre Cordeiro, president of CADE, participated in the NGA engagement session and highlighted the presence of the authority in the conference. “These events allow for the exchange of experiences, alignment of international good practices, and monitoring of the main trends and challenges faced by antitrust authorities all over the world”, he stated.
Mr Diogo Thomson and Mrs Camila Cabral, commissioners at CADE, and Mrs Lilian Marques, chief-economist of the antitrust authority, also took part in the panels on capacities for the future, current trends, and different approaches to the same merger, addressing the “Bunge/Viterra” case.
In the plenary on “Public Procurement and Competition”, Mr Alexandre Barreto, superintendent-general at CADE, presented the “Guide for Fighting Cartels in Procurements”, elaborated by the Brazilian antitrust authority. “The guide aims to support managers in the identification and prevention of anticompetitive practices, since they are strategies that reduce risks of collusion among companies and promote integrity in public procurements”, he summed up.
