Cade releases report on digital economy during the VI BRICS Competition Conference

The Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE, in its Portuguese acronym) released, last Tuesday (17/09), the “BRICS in the Digital Economy: Competition Policy in Practice” report, during the VI BRICS Competition Conference, held in Moscow, Russia.

The report offers a general view of competition policies and enforcement from BRICS countries in digital markets, presenting different experiences in the application of antitrust norms to explore common challenges and possible insights for each of the authorities. The material aims to provide a solid basis upon which the participants of the group shall strengthen cooperation among themselves.

The report is an outcome of the BRICS Working Group on the Competition Issues in the Digital Market, led by CADE. The group was created during the V BRICS Competition Conference, hosted by Brazil in 2017.

The drafting of the report was built on the answers to a questionnaire proposed by CADE, in which it sought to map the practices and challenges faced by the BRICS competition authorities in the digital economy. The report is based on the answers presented by the authorities of Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa. Due to a recent institutional reform, the antitrust authority of China could not contribute with the first publication but will participate in future initiatives.

This is the first of a series of publications that the WG plans to release, aiming to better understand and compare the competition policies in the digital economy, as well as enhance future cooperation among the agencies.
