CADE clears iFood’s acquisition of Shopper
On 26 February, the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) cleared without restrictions iFood’s acquisition of equity interests of Shopper. The Tribunal of CADE decided unanimously following the vote of Commissioner José Levi, the rapporteur of the case.
iFood is a Brazilian company that operates as an online delivery platform, connecting consumers to restaurants, drugstores, supermarkets, and other sectors. Now the company intends to use its expertise to boost Shopper’s growth. On the other hand, Shopper is a platform that offers supermarket items directly to end consumers, operating in 129 cities in the Brazilian State of São Paulo.
The transaction aims to foster competition, expand Shopper’s market share, and complement iFood’s business model, which is mainly focused on food delivery. According to the companies, the transaction can benefit consumers and foster competition in the online shopping sector.
The Tribunal of CADE concluded that the transaction does not raise competition risks, since it involves only iFood’s acquisition of minority voting stock. In addition, Shopper still has an operation area relatively restricted to the State of São Paulo.
