CADE among the most renowned antitrust agencies in the world

The Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) received, by the third consecutive year, four stars in the annual ranking published by the Global Competition Review (GCR), a British journal specialized in competition policy and regulation.

With this result, CADE remains among the most renowned antitrust agencies in the world, only behind agencies from France, Germany, the United States (Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division and Federal Trade Commission), European Union, Japan, and Korea.

In the current edition of the ranking, 36 agencies from various jurisdictions were assessed through both quantitative and qualitative criteria. The assessment refers to the antitrust authorities’ performance in protecting economy against anticompetitive conducts in 2014.

According to the publication, CADE maintained its rank for continuing to review mergers quickly and efficiently, despite the increasing number of complex cases submitted to the agency’s approval.

Furthermore, GCR’s report points out procedure changes set forth by CADE in 2014 as being indicative of the agency’s good performance. The British journal highlighted the implementation of the Electronic Information System (SEI in its acronym in Portuguese), the official system for document management, as a result of CADE’s efforts to improve data security and transparency.

GCR also points out CADE’s endeavors to publish guidelines on the application of the Brazilian antitrust law, especially Resolution no. 10/2014, which regulates the notification of associative agreements.

For the President of CADE, Vinicius Marques de Carvalho, the ranking by Global Competition Review is the acknowledgment by the international community of all CADE’s investments and efforts to enhance its performance in competition enforcement in Brazil.
