Institutional Sandwich Doctorate Program Abroad - PDSE - CAPES

The Council of the Postgraduate Program in Space Geophysics (PGGES) of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), a member of the CAPES Excellence Program (PROEX), makes public and for the knowledge of interested parties the procedures and deadlines for registration and selection of candidates for 1 (one) Sandwich Doctorate Scholarship Abroad – PDSE, in accordance with Notice 17/2025,, published at https://www.gov.br/capes/pt-br/centrais-de-conteudo/editais/21082025_Edital_2662823_SEI_2661209_Edital_n__17_2025.pdf, to select scholarship holders within the scope of the Institutional Sandwich Doctorate Program Abroad (PDSE), in accordance with CAPES Ordinance No. 77 of March 8, 2024, to carry out scientific exchange and the academic qualification of students from Brazil, through the granting of up to 2,828 (two thousand, eight hundred and twenty-eight) scholarships abroad in the Sandwich Doctorate modality.

The candidate must meet the following requirements (To apply for the internal selection, check the requirements for registration with CAPES, after selection in the notice: https://www.gov.br/capes/pt-br/acesso-a-informacao/acoes-e-programas/bolsas/bolsas-e-auxilios-internacionais/encontre-aqui/paises/multinacional/programa-de-doutorado-sanduiche-no-exterior-pdse):

I - be a Brazilian citizen by birth or naturalization, or a foreigner with a residence permit or a former permanent visa;

II - not hold a doctorate degree in any field of knowledge at the time of registration;

III - be regularly enrolled in the Doctorate course in Space Geophysics;

IV - not exceed the total period for the doctorate, according to the regulatory deadline of the course for the defense of the thesis, and the time spent abroad must be planned so that at least six months remain in Brazil for the completion of credits and the defense of the thesis;

V - have completed the number of credits related to the doctorate program in Brazil that is compatible with the prospect of completing the course, in a timely manner, after completing the activities abroad;

VI - have obtained approval in the thesis proposal or have completed at least the first year of the Doctorate, and in the latter case, have the prospect of completing the qualifying exam and defending the thesis proposal by the end of the second period of 2025;

VII – have an electronic message from the co-advisor abroad stating the candidate’s language fluency (if the candidate is selected to be nominated by the course, this message must be replaced by a declaration of recognition of language fluency signed by the co-advisor abroad and the declaration of recognition of language fluency signed by the advisor in Brazil, as per Annex II and Annex III, respectively). The candidate may, alternatively, prove a level of proficiency in the foreign language as per Annex IV; The attachments can be found at the following link:

VIII - have a valid ORCiD (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) identifier at the time of application;

IX - not accumulate scholarships of the same level, financed with federal resources, and the candidate must declare the receipt of other scholarships. In this case, upon approval of the scholarship, the beneficiary must request the suspension or cancellation of the preexisting benefit;

X - not have been awarded a Sandwich Doctorate scholarship abroad in this or another doctorate course previously taken; and

XI - not be in default with CAPES or any other Public Administration agencies.

Registration will take place in two opportunities:

a) First Call: Candidates must register for this selection process between 12:00 AM on September 8, 2025, and 11:59 PM on September 19, 2025, by sending documentation to posgrad.ges@inpe.br, with the subject line "PDSE Sandwich Doctorate Selection - candidate's full name."

b) Second Call: Candidates must register for this selection process between 12:00 AM on December 1, 2025, and 11:59 PM on January 29, 2026, by sending documentation to posgrad.ges@inpe.br, with the subject line "PDSE Sandwich Doctorate Selection - candidate's full name."

The documents required for the application are:

I - Research plan to be carried out abroad, indicating the existence of infrastructure at the host institution that enables the execution of the proposed work and the schedule of activities formally approved by the Brazilian advisor and the co-advisor abroad;

II - Updated Lattes CV;

III - Letter from the Brazilian advisor, duly signed and on the letterhead of the home institution, justifying the need for the internship and demonstrating technical-scientific interaction with the co-advisor abroad for the development of the proposed activities. It must state the regulatory deadline for the student to defend the thesis and that the credits already obtained in the doctorate are compatible with the prospect of completion in a timely manner, after completing the internship abroad;

IV - Declaration from the co-advisor abroad, expressing interest in receiving the student. If the student is considered eligible for the scholarship, he/she must request a Declaration from the co-advisor abroad from the foreign advisor, duly signed and on the institution's letterhead, informing the month/year of the beginning and end of the internship abroad, according to the model available in Annex V of Notice No. 6/2024, by the deadline of May 16, 2024.

V - Declaration of recognition of linguistic fluency signed by the co-advisor abroad according to the model available in Annex II of the Notice.

VI - Declaration of recognition of linguistic fluency signed by the advisor in Brazil, according to the model available in Annex III of the Notice.

VII - Brief CV of the co-advisor abroad, who must have compatible scientific and/or technological production and have at least a doctorate degree.

Candidates are solely responsible for the documentation provided at the time of registration. The lack of any document will result in the rejection of the application.
