Institutional Sandwich Doctorate Program Abroad - PDSE - CAPES

The Council of the Graduate Program in Space Geophysics (PGGES) at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE)—a member of the CAPES Program of Excellence (PROEX)—hereby announces the procedures and deadlines for the application and selection of candidates for one (1) Sandwich Doctoral Scholarship Abroad (PDSE). This process is governed by Call for Applications No. 22/2026 (available at https://www.gov.br/capes/pt-br/centrais-de-conteudo/editais/sei_2849220_edital_n__22_2026.pdf/@@display-file/file and published at https://www.gov.br/capes/pt-br/acesso-a-informacao/acoes-e-programas/bolsas/bolsas-e-auxilios-internacionais/encontre-aqui/paises/multinacional/programa-de-doutorado-sanduiche-no-exterior-pdse) and aims to select scholarship recipients under the Institutional Sandwich Doctoral Program Abroad (PDSE)—in accordance with CAPES Ordinance No. 77 of March 8, 2024—to facilitate scientific exchange and the academic qualification of students from Brazil.

The scholarship is awarded for a period ranging from four (4) to nine (9) months.

This selection process constitutes the first stage of the PDSE—specifically the internal selection of candidates at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The results must be published by September 30, 2026, as outlined in the aforementioned call for applications: https://www.gov.br/capes/pt-br/centrais-de-conteudo/editais/sei_2849220_edital_n__22_2026.pdf/@@display-file/file. Application submission via the CAPES system—including filling out the online application form and submitting mandatory documentation—must be completed by the student selected in the internal process between October 20 and November 18, 2026 (Brazilian time)..

Candidates must submit their applications for this selection process between 00:00 on July 15, 2026, and 23:59 on August 31, 2026, by sending the required documentation to posgrad.ges@inpe.br with the subject line: “Seleção Doutorado Sanduíche PDSE - [candidate's full name]”. Applications submitted after the deadline or via any method other than the one specified above will not be accepted.

Candidates must attach the following documentation:

I - Research plan to be carried out abroad, indicating the existence of infrastructure at the host institution that enables the execution of the proposed work and the activity schedule, formally approved by the Brazilian advisor and the co-advisor abroad;

II - Updated Lattes CV;

III – Email message from the Brazilian advisor justifying the need for the research stay and demonstrating technical-scientific interaction with the co-advisor abroad regarding the development of the proposed activities. Must state the student's regulatory deadline for the thesis defense and confirm that the credits already earned in the doctoral program are compatible with completing the degree on schedule following the internship abroad (if the candidate is selected for nomination by the program, this message must be replaced by a letter from the Brazilian supervisor—duly signed and on the home institution's letterhead—justifying the need for the internship and demonstrating technical-scientific interaction with the co-supervisor abroad regarding the proposed activities);

IV – Email from the co-supervisor abroad expressing interest in hosting the student for an internship and stating the start and end months/years of the internship abroad (if the candidate is selected for nomination by the program, this message must be replaced by a declaration from the co-supervisor abroad—duly signed and on the institution's letterhead—stating the start and end months/years of the internship abroad, following the template in Annex V).

V – Email from the co-supervisor abroad acknowledging the candidate's language fluency (if the candidate is selected for nomination by the program, this message must be replaced by a declaration acknowledging language fluency signed by the co-supervisor abroad, following the template available in Annex II, if no proficiency test exists);

VI – Email from the supervisor in Brazil acknowledging the candidate's language fluency (if the candidate is selected for nomination by the program, this email must be replaced by a formal statement from the supervisor in Brazil acknowledging language fluency, using the template available in Annex III, provided there is no Proficiency Test). Regarding items V and VI, the candidate may alternatively demonstrate foreign language proficiency via a Proficiency Test, as per Annex IV.

VII – Abbreviated CV of the co-supervisor abroad, who must hold a doctoral degree and possess a compatible record of scientific and/or technological output.

Candidates bear sole and exclusive responsibility for the documentation submitted at the time of application. Failure to provide any required document will result in the rejection of the application.
