Opportunities and Mentoring
The Theoretical Physics Coordination (COTEO) at the Brazilian Center for Research in Physics (CBPF) offers a dynamic, collaborative, and international research environment, bringing together researchers working at the forefront of Theoretical Physics and interdisciplinary fields. Located in the Urca district of Rio de Janeiro, CBPF combines academic excellence with a well-established research infrastructure and a unique quality of life, close to major cultural centers, universities, and areas of outstanding natural beauty.
COTEO maintains strong connections with national and international institutions, promoting seminars, workshops, schools, and scientific collaborations across various areas of Physics. The environment fosters high-level scientific training, continuous exchange of ideas, and the development of innovative research projects.
Graduate Studies: Master's and PhD Programs
COTEO actively participates in CBPF’s graduate program, offering Master's and PhD opportunities in an environment of academic excellence and intense scientific activity. Students benefit from close interaction with experienced researchers, international collaborations, and access to current and challenging research topics.
Research areas include:
Condensed Matter Physics
Quantum Information and Quantum Computing
Field Theory and Mathematical Physics
Gravitation and Cosmology
Complex Systems and Statistical Physics
Computational Physics and Data Science Applied to Physics
Students are encouraged to participate in conferences, advanced schools, and exchange programs, becoming integrated into the national and international scientific community from an early stage of their careers.

Researchers Available for Supervision
Flaviano José Marchiori dos Santos
Research areas: Density Functional Theory (DFT), magnetic materials modeling, atomistic spin dynamics, topological spin waves, and the theory of inelastic neutron and electron scattering. Google Scholar.
Nei Lopes da Silva Júnior
Research areas: Superconductivity, quantum phase transitions, and strongly correlated systems.
Postdoctoral Opportunities and Research Programs
COTEO offers continuous opportunities for postdoctoral researchers through institutional fellowships as well as projects funded by national and international agencies.
Particular emphasis is placed on opportunities associated with the National Institutes of Science and Technology (INCTs), which promote large-scale collaborative projects in strategic areas of contemporary science. These programs frequently provide postdoctoral fellowships as well as resources for scientific mobility and collaboration.

In addition, researchers may participate in the Institutional Capacity Building Program (PCI), which aims to strengthen the scientific and technological activities carried out at CBPF. PCI offers opportunities for researchers at different career stages, enabling participation in long-term research projects in close collaboration with COTEO research groups.
Visiting Researchers
COTEO regularly hosts visiting researchers from Brazil and abroad for short-, medium-, and long-term stays. Visitors may engage in scientific collaborations, deliver seminars and advanced courses, and develop joint research projects with the coordination’s research groups.
Researchers interested in scientific visits are encouraged to contact directly the members of COTEO whose research interests align with their own. The international and collaborative environment at CBPF provides excellent opportunities for building new partnerships and strengthening high-impact scientific networks.
