Germany has officially joined the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, a central initiative of Brazil's G20 presidency. The alliance aims to channel resources into effective programs targeting hunger and poverty, supporting two key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The announcement was made at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference on Monday, October 7.

The Global Alliance’s aim is to support and accelerate efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty in the world, and is open to membership from governments, international organizations, knowledge institutions, development funds and banks, and philanthropic institutions.

After making its membership official, the German government said it aims to promote sustainable agriculture and strengthen social safety nets such as minimum wage policies. Moreover, Germany is making available for Brazil’s G20 presidency the tools developed within the scope of the Global Alliance for Food Security — launched by Minister Svenja Schulze in 2022.

Developed in cooperation with the World Bank, these tools include national food and nutrition security preparedness plans in 25 countries and a global coordination data dashboard that provides real-time information on the global food situation.

Minister Wellington Dias — of Social Development and Assistance, Family, and Hunger Eradication — highlighted the importance participation from other countries. “We are very honored by Germany’s membership and extend the invitation to other countries and institutions so that, in November, during the G20 Summit, the Alliance can be created with all partnerships that make it truly global,” he said. “Our proposal is simple and action-oriented: an alliance to implement well-designed social policies focused on the poorest and most vulnerable.”

GLOBAL ALLIANCE – The initiative aims to promote international cooperation to secure funding and expertise for the implementation of public policies and social technologies proven effective in eradicating global hunger and poverty. The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty will work to reduce inequalities and contribute to revitalizing global partnerships for sustainable development. By advocating for sustainable, inclusive, and equitable transition pathways, it will also support the achievement of other interconnected Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
