Record market access mark the agricultural sector’s best six months in foreign trade history

In the first six months of 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Ministério da Agricultura e Pecuária/MAPA) opened up 72 new markets for Brazilian agricultural products, benefiting 30 countries. This performance surpasses previous records and exceeds the totals recorded in 2019 and 2022, with 35 and 53 new openings, respectively.

June marked a pivotal milestone, with the most successful half-year in Brazilian agricultural trade history. The month alone saw 26 market opportunities across 13 countries, constituting 32% of this year's total expansions.

“Brazil remains the premier destination for quality products. Under President Lula’s administration, we have achieved a record-breaking 150 market opportunities in just 18 months for Brazilian agricultural products," said MAPA’s Minister Carlos Fávaro.

The 2024 market openings cover all continents: Africa (6 countries: South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Nigeria, Zambia and Egypt); Asia (13 countries: Saudi Arabia, Armenia, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, China and Hong Kong, South Korea, Philippines, India, Oman, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Singapore and Turkey); Europe (3 countries: Belarus, Russia and Great Britain); Oceania (1 country - Australia); and the Americas (7 countries: Canada, Mexico, United States, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia and Peru).

Products contemplated in the sanitary and phytosanitary agreements include farmed fish and derivatives, vegetable seeds, live pigs and their derivatives, pork, fish, gelatin and collagen from various sources, processed poultry proteins, shrimp-based products, bovine embryos, bovine semen, tilapia fry, ornamental fish, sheep meat and meat products, beef extract, green coffee, eggs, and non-GMO corn.

The expansion into international markets has propelled Brazilian exports, with agribusiness accounting for 49.6% of the total in the first five months of 2024, generating $67.17 billion in revenue.

“Under the guidance of President Lula and Minister Fávaro, we have been diligently engaging with numerous countries to expand opportunities for rural producers, enhance export facilitation and bolster the competitiveness of Brazilian products in the global market," emphasized Roberto Perosa, secretary of Commerce and International Relations at MAPA.

Since the beginning of 2023, under President Lula's third term and Minister Carlos Fávaro's tenure at MAPA, Brazil has expanded into a total of 150 markets across 52 countries.

This is the result of close cooperation between MAPA and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministério das Relações Exteriores/MRE).
