The Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and Elsevier held the fifth edition of the "CAPES/Elsevier Award" on December 5, 2023.

The prestigious award recognized 13 Brazilian research institutions for their outstanding contribution to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ) and a special citation. According to news published on 11-30-2023, the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) won in three categories: SDG 2: Hunger and sustainable agriculture; SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth; and SDG 15: Life on earth.

According to data provided by Elsevier, the ranking of institutions was based on scientific production and metrics for the period from 2018 to 2022, obtained through the SciVal tool, which enables the analysis of research results from more than 20,000 institutions in 230 countries around the world.
