Book launch: The River Plate Basin in the 19th Century
In partnership with the Guita e José Mindlin Brasiliana Library (BBM), FUNAG is launching the book A Bacia do Prata no século XIX: política, economia e sociedade [The River Plate Basin in the 19th Century: Politics, Economy and Society], organized by Ambassador Gelson Fonseca Jr. and Professor Rodrigo Goyena Soares.
The book stems from the editorial trajectory of Cadernos do CHDD, a publication by FUNAG’s Center for History and Diplomatic Documentation, which has, since 2002, made a significant contribution to the study of Brazilian foreign policy in the Plate region during the Empire, bringing together an important collection of documents on the subject.
Inspired by the approach of Professor Goyena Soares, who proposes the study of the River Plate Basin as a “world region”, the book expands the scope of analysis by integrating multiple dimensions of Platine history. The publication articulates themes such as politics, conflicts, culture, economics and cartography. The diverse essays offer new perspectives on regional history and the diplomatic environment of the 19th century.
The book is available for free download at FUNAG’s digital library. The printed version can be purchased from the official online store.
