Book explores new perspectives on South American diplomacy in the 19th century
Diplomacia e conexões internacionais: a América do Sul no longo século XIX [Diplomacy and International Connections: South America During the Long Nineteenth Century] is FUNAG’s newest publication. Organized by Gabriel Passetti, the book is the outcome of the international symposium “South American International Politics in the 19th Century”, held in 2023 by the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), which brought together researchers from a range of universities in Brazil, Argentina, Chile and France. The book investigates international relations in South America from the late 18th century to the early decades of the 20th century—a period marked by independence, territorial disputes, and political, economic, and cultural transformations.
The publication calls for a broader approach to traditional diplomatic history by incorporating the role of unofficial agents in international dynamics. In addition to official diplomats and state representatives, the chapters address the role of intellectuals, merchants, women and political exiles who acted as cultural mediators and agents of connection between countries.
The publication is available for free download at FUNAG's digital library. The printed version can be purchased in the online store.
