The Brazilian government sanctioned the Statute for Persons with Cancer. Based on the principles of human dignity, equality, non-discrimination, it guarantees the rights to early diagnosis, free equitable universal treatment and clear information regarding the disease and treatment.

According to this new federal law, the patient also has the right to social and legal assistance and priority of care, respecting other preferences to be given to the elderly, pregnant women, persons with disabilities and clinical emergencies.

The Statute also grants free home care and hospitalization within the scope of the Unified Health System on a case by case basis. It additionally ensures the right to educational support in a hospital or at home, especially for children and adolescents.
