About the Postgraduate Program
The Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF) was founded in 1949 by a group of eminent Brazilian scientists, including César Lattes, Jaime Tiomno, and José Leite Lopes. It was a pioneering institution in scientific research in experimental and theoretical physics in Brazil, playing a decisive role in the development of physics in the country. CBPF trained the first generations of Brazilian physicists, who went on to excel in national and international research institutions. As a pioneer in graduate education in physics in Brazil, CBPF's first Master's thesis was also the first in the country. Its viva was on February 23, 1965, by Jorge Silvio Helman who was supervised by Walter Baltensperger. This thesis was titled Spontaneous Phonon Emission by Carriers in a Perfect Crystalline Lattice at 0 K, and it is about approximate solutions of the Boltzmann equation for electrons in semiconductors. Therefore, CBPF's first thesis was in the field of Condensed Matter Theory. The second thesis was that of Alberto Vidal Carrion, Relativistic Equations for Particles with Spin, and it was supervised by José Leite Lopes. This thesis was presented on July 5, 1965. Four more theses followed in the same year. The first doctoral thesis viva at CBPF was that of Rogério C.T. da Costa, presented on December 7, 1966, titled On Fluctuations in Statistical Mechanics, supervised by H. Moisés Nussenzveig. Since 1976, CBPF has been part of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). In 2000, it became part of the Ministry of Science and Technology as one of its Research Units.
CBPF maintains important scientific programs in various fundamental and applied physics areas, including: Condensed Matter Physics, Quantum Information and Computation, Materials Science, Magnetism and Superconductivity, Nanofabrication and Nanoscience, Biological Systems Physics, Statistical Physics and Dynamical Systems, Cosmology and Relativity, High Energy Physics and Cosmic Rays, Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics, Field and Particle Physics, Geology, Archaeology, Applied Physics, and Scientific Instrumentation.
CBPF's experimental area has received significant investment in recent years, practically tripling its experimental capacity and creating the National Nanotechnology Laboratory (LABNANO), alongside several other new multi-user laboratories. This has attracted a large number of students, postdoctoral researchers, and visitors, enriching the experience of our students and creating an active and engaging research environment. Nationally, CBPF collaborates with various research institutes and universities, having contributed over the years to the training of a large number of researchers in Brazil and abroad, particularly in Latin American countries. CBPF periodically hosts a series of Schools and Workshops, bringing together specialists from around the world in various areas. Notable examples include the CBPF School, a biennial event attracting around 900 undergraduate and graduate students from across Brazil, the recently created Experimental Physics School, where students can experience an immersive two-week experimental activity in CBPF laboratories, the Gravitation and Cosmology School, the Nanofabrication School, the Transmission Electron Microscopy School, LISHEP, ICAME, and LACAME, among others.
The CBPF Postgraduate Program celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2022, a historic milestone for physics in Brazil. Since its inception, it has continuously developed research and graduate education in physics, acting as a national research center for promoting and fostering physics collaboration. The program supports theoretical and experimental projects in international collaborations, always seeking to advance technology for Brazilian society by integrating phenomenology and experimentation, attracting visitors, newly graduated doctors, and students.
CBPF Postgraduate students have access to extensive infrastructure to support their thesis work, including individual computers, mechanical workshops, a library, locally produced cryogenic liquids, laboratories for sample preparation, treatment, and characterization, a chemistry laboratory, among others. Master's and Doctoral students are strongly encouraged to participate in national and international scientific events, presenting their work and establishing scientific ties with other research institutions. To support this, they receive financial aid from CBPF's Scientific Training Coordination. CBPF students actively participate in the Scientific Training Council through an elected representative who contributes to ongoing discussions about improving the Postgraduate program and prioritizing investments in research and teaching infrastructure.
