The Board of Directors of the Brazilian Mining Agency (ANM) has unanimously approved, under Deliberative Circuit No. 53, the appointment of Director José Fernando de Mendonça Gomes Júnior as supervisor of the Northern Regional Directive, which encompasses the Regional Management Units in the states of Pará, Amazonas, Roraima and Amapá.

The decision was formalised in Deliberative Circuit Decision No. 53/2025 (18276824), in accordance with Article 90 of ANM’s Internal Regulations (Resolution No. 211, dated 9 July 2025) and Deliberation No. 68, dated 14 March 2024 (11997084).

Oversight of the Northern Regional Directive plays a strategic role in strengthening the Agency’s institutional presence in the Amazon, a region marked by significant challenges in inspection, regulation and the promotion of responsible mining.

For Director José Fernando, the new appointment represents an opportunity to reinforce ANM’s presence in the region and to highlight its strategic relevance to Brazil and the wider world. “Our priority will be to demonstrate that mining can be conducted with respect for the environment, local communities and sustainability. We will act decisively, in close collaboration with the ANM team, to combat illegal mining,” the director emphasised.

José Fernando also highlighted the importance of fostering closer dialogue with regional units. “At the beginning of the year, I will visit all Northern states to identify key demands and engage directly with our staff,” he stated.

With this new composition, the Board reaffirms ANM’s commitment to administrative continuity, regional efficiency and the integration of actions across the Agency’s units nationwide.

The Brazilian Mining Agency’s operational structure is organised into five strategic axes, each under the responsibility of a designated director:

  • Axis I – Institutional Management: Oversees Strategic Planning (SPE), Administrative Management (SGA), Human Resources (SGP), Information Technology (STI), Communications (ASCOM) and Parliamentary Affairs (ASPAR).

Responsible: Director-General Mauro Henrique Sousa.

  • Axis II – Regulatory Governance: Covers SPR and SEG, as well as the South-Southeast Directive, which includes the states of ES, RJ, SP, PR, SC and RS.

Responsible: Director-General Mauro Henrique Sousa.

  • Axis III – Licensing Management: Comprises the Licensing Superintendency (SOT) and the Central-West Directive, which includes RO/AC, TO, GO, MT and MS.

Responsible: Director Tasso Mendonça Júnior.

  • Axis IV – Revenue Efficiency and Distribution: Includes SAR and the Northern Directive (AM, AP, PA and RR).

Responsible: Director José Fernando de Mendonça Gomes Júnior.

  • Axis V – Institutional Security: Encompasses Inspection (SFI) and Mining Dams (SBM), as well as the Northeast Directive, which covers the states of AL, BA, CE, MA, PB, PE, PI, RN and SE.

Responsible: Director Roger Romão Cabral.

This structure reinforces the role of the Brazilian Mining Agency as a modern, decentralised federal agency committed to the sustainable management of the country’s mineral resources.
