Official visit to the United Kingdom
official visit to the United Kingdom

On February 6 and 7, a delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (Mapa) conducted an official visit to the United Kingdom to reinforce bilateral relations, expand market access, and emphasize Brazil’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices.

The mission commenced with a coordination meeting at the Brazilian Embassy in London to align strategic objectives. Subsequently, Mr. Luís Rua, Secretary of Trade and International Relations, and Mr. Carlos Goulart, Secretary of Agricultural Defense, held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Daniel Zeichner, Minister of State for Food Security and Rural Affairs at the United Kingdom’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the British counterpart to Mapa. The discussions established the framework for the forthcoming session of the II Joint Agriculture Committee and addressed opportunities for enhanced cooperation and sustainability. During the Committee session, representatives of both nations deliberated on critical trade matters, underscoring the Committee’s pivotal role in the Brazil-United Kingdom partnership. The constructive dialogue concluded with optimism for future collaboration.

The first day concluded with a meeting hosted by Brazil’s Ambassador to London, Antônio Patriota.

Engagement with the UK retail sector

On the second day, the delegation met with senior representatives from leading United Kingdom retail chains, which collectively account for over 70 percent of the nation’s retail market. The agenda focused on fostering commercial cooperation and presenting Brazil’s advancements in sustainable agriculture, notably its significant progress in reducing deforestation rates.

The visit concluded with a meeting chaired by His Excellency José Augusto de Castro, during which the delegation explored developments concerning international coffee and sugar organizations.

This official mission reaffirms the Ministry’s dedication to broadening market access, promoting Brazil’s leadership in sustainable agricultural practices, and fostering robust international partnerships.
