Brazilian Delegation Visits China’s leading agricultural research institution

On Tuesday, May 13, the Brazilian delegation taking part in the official mission to China visited the headquarters of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) in Beijing. The group was led by Embrapa President Silvia Massruhá, along with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock’s Secretary for Agricultural Defense, Carlos Goulart, and Secretary for Trade and International Relations, Luís Rua.

CAAS is China’s foremost agricultural research institution and a global reference in technological innovation for the sector. The visit focused on deepening scientific cooperation between Brazil and China, particularly in soybean genetic improvement through biotechnology and gene editing, as well as the exchange of knowledge related to germplasm resources.

“This visit marks an important step toward strengthening our bilateral partnership in key strategic areas,” said Secretary Carlos Goulart. “Brazil is one of the world’s top grain producers and a global leader in adopting biotechnology in crops such as soybeans, corn, and cotton. Understanding how China develops and regulates biotechnology is essential, as the success of our agriculture is directly tied to the widespread adoption of advanced technologies.”

Embrapa President Silvia Massruhá emphasized the role of scientific exchange in advancing agricultural innovation in both countries. “For Brazilian scientists, it is an honor to collaborate with China. Our partnership with CAAS began in the early 2000s, and we are eager to strengthen it in areas such as biotechnology, gene editing, digital agriculture, and sustainability. We must move forward with public policies that support the adoption of technology in the field. Our challenge is to promote the integration of innovations that add value and improve production systems,” she said.

The visit was part of the official agenda of the Ministry’s mission to China, which seeks to expand partnerships and business opportunities in agricultural trade and technology.

The Brazilian delegation included Agricultural Attachés Jean Gouhie and Leandro Feijó; Director of the Department of Non-Tariff and Sustainability Negotiations, Augusto Billi; Director of Commercial Promotion and Investments, Ângela Pimenta Peres; Foreign Investment Coordinator, Thiago Luiz Arcebispo; Head of the GMO Biosafety Monitoring Service, Eder Toppa; Head of Embrapa Soybean, Alexandre Nepomuceno; Vice President of the National Biosafety Technical Commission (CTNBio), Mário Murakami; and Embassy Secretaries Isadora da Silveira and Henrique Sato.

Representing CAAS were Deputy Director-General Ren Yulong; Deputy Director of the Research Management Division, Lu Yuqing; Professors Qiu Lijuan, Yan Zhe, Guo Yong, Guan Rongxia, Sun Suli, Liu Zhangxiong, and Hong Huilong; as well as postdoctoral researchers Yu Lili and Zhou Chunlei.
