Brazil Opens Market for Live Sheep Exports to Algeria
The Brazilian government and the Algerian government have concluded sanitary negotiations allowing Brazil to export live sheep to Algeria.
With a population of approximately 46 million, Algeria is an increasingly important trading partner for Brazil. In 2021, Brazilian agribusiness exports to Algeria totaled around USD 1.3 billion, rising to over USD 2.2 billion in 2024. Key products include sugar-alcohol and soybean complex goods, cereals, flours, and food preparations.
This new market opening represents significant opportunities, particularly for exporters in Brazil’s North and Northeast regions, where sheep farming plays a vital economic and social role, supporting job creation and regional development.
With this achievement, Brazilian agribusiness has reached 401 market openings since early 2023, including 101 in 2025 alone.
These results reflect the coordinated efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, demonstrating Brazil’s commitment to expanding trade and strengthening its global presence in agribusiness.
