Brazil gains access to export seafood to India

The mission led by Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, to India in November of last year continues to yield positive outcomes for Brazil. On Friday (19), Brazil received confirmation of two new market accesses for India: the ability to export farmed seafood (aquaculture) and wild-caught seafood (extractive fishing).

This announcement further complements Brazil's agricultural outreach into the Asian nation. In the past 12 months, the Indian government has granted authorization for the importation of Brazilian açaí powder and açaí juice.

In 2023, India ranked as the 12th largest destination for Brazilian agricultural exports, with sales totaling US$ 2.9 billion. Sugar and soybean oil were among the most prominent products traded.

According to Agrostat (Brazilian Agribusiness Foreign Trade Statistics), Brazil exported over 12 thousand tons of seafood to approximately 90 countries in the first three months of this year, generating revenues of US$ 193 million. This represents a notable increase of over 160% compared to the same period last year, when sales amounted to US$ 74 million.

"We are committed to expanding the presence of Brazilian agricultural products on global markets. This strategy not only opens more international opportunities for our products and demonstrates confidence in our sanitary control system, but also bolsters the domestic economy. With these recent trade openings, we are creating more jobs and enhancing the income of Brazilian producers," emphasized Roberto Perosa, the Secretary of Trade and International Relations at the Ministry of Agriculture.

With these two commercial expansions, Brazilian agribusiness has now achieved its 30th international agricultural trade opening just this year. Over the last 16 months, a total of 108 new markets accesses have been established across 50 countries.

The expansion of Brazilian agribusiness is the outcome of coordinated efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), with active participation from the Brazilian fishing sector.
