Brazil can now export shrimp-based products to South Korea

The Brazilian government welcomed South Korea's decision to authorize the export of ten shrimp-based products from Brazil to its market, without requiring an International Health Certificate (IHC).

Non-quarantined shrimp can be marketed in various forms: headless, peeled, eviscerated or whole, with or without tail, cooked or raw, all available frozen or chilled. Varieties include Ebi shrimp (for sushi), head-on and shell-on shrimp, Torpedo shrimp (breaded), seasoned shrimp, and a mix of shrimp with pieces of fish.

Brazilian companies interested in exporting these products must be registered with the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Registration can be completed by either the South Korean importer or the Brazilian exporter.

This marks the second authorization for the import of Brazilian agricultural products by South Korea in less than a month. In early April, the country allowed Brazil to export animal by-products (meals and fats from poultry) for animal feed.

In 2023, South Korea was the eighth largest destination for Brazilian agricultural products, with exports totaling US$ 3.37 billion. In the first three months of this year, Brazilian sales to the South Korean market reached US$ 646 million.

With this recent authorization, Brazilian agribusiness has achieved its 106th commercial expansion in 50 countries since the beginning of last year.

The positive outcome is the result of collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).
