Brazil and Chile deepen agribusiness trade relations in high-level mission

From March 10 to 13, a mission led by Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) advanced trade ties with Chile, focusing on agribusiness supply chain integration. The delegation, led by Secretary of Trade and International Relations Luís Rua and Secretary of Agricultural Defense Carlos Goulart, followed directives from Minister Carlos Fávaro to expand cooperation and market access.

Chile remains a strategic partner for Brazil in South America, with bilateral trade reaching approximately USD 10 billion in 2023. Key exports include meat, soybeans, and forestry products, while Chile is Brazil’s top salmon supplier, meeting the country’s growing demand. The 2022 free trade agreement between the two nations has progressively reduced tariff and technical barriers, facilitating the flow of goods, services, and investments.

The mission featured high-level seminars, bilateral meetings, and technical visits aimed at fostering business opportunities and strengthening collaboration between the Brazilian and Chilean agribusiness sectors.

The agenda began with the Seminar on Agribusiness Supply Chain Integration, organized by the Brazilian Association of Animal Recycling (ABRA) in partnership with Mapa and the Brazilian Embassy in Santiago. The event highlighted opportunities for deeper trade cooperation and supply chain synergies. Following the seminar, the delegation met with Chile’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Ignacia Fernández, to discuss productive integration, sanitary and phytosanitary cooperation, and market expansion strategies.

The delegation also conducted technical visits to leading Chilean companies in aquaculture and animal recycling, as well as a company specializing in nutritional solutions for aquaculture. These visits facilitated valuable exchanges of expertise and opened doors for new business partnerships.

Concluding the mission, the final day included a meeting with José Guajardo Reyes, National Director of Chile’s Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), and his team. Discussions focused on strategies to streamline agribusiness trade and expand export opportunities for both countries. The Brazilian delegation also participated in a business roundtable on animal recycling, exploring potential partnerships and commercial expansion.

On the final day, the delegation met with José Guajardo Reyes, National Director of Chile’s Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), to explore ways to streamline agribusiness trade and enhance export opportunities. The mission concluded with a business roundtable on animal recycling, where industry leaders discussed commercial expansion and new partnership opportunities.

With Chilean President Gabriel Boric expected to visit Brazil in April, the mission set the stage for tangible progress in bilateral trade relations. Mapa reaffirmed its commitment to translating these opportunities into concrete results, further strengthening Brazil’s global agribusiness leadership.
