Theoretical Physics Coordination (COTEO)
COTEO – Theoretical Physics Coordination at the Brazilian Center for Research in Physics (CBPF) is a center of excellence dedicated to investigating the foundations of physics and developing new theoretical approaches to complex systems and quantum phenomena. Its activities encompass areas such as statistical mechanics—particularly nonequilibrium systems, chaos, and active matter—condensed matter physics, field theory and mathematical physics, as well as quantum information and quantum computing. The diversity of its research lines reflects work ranging from fundamental questions to contemporary challenges involving topological materials, spintronics, and disordered systems.
With strong national and international engagement, COTEO plays a central role in the education and training of highly qualified researchers, actively contributing to graduate programs and broad scientific collaborations. The coordination also stands out for its extensive use of advanced analytical and computational methods—including first-principles simulations, multiscale modeling, and data science and machine learning techniques—establishing itself as a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment for high-impact scientific research.
