Graduate Programs and Scientific and Technological Initiation

The National Observatory is a research and teaching institution located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, which is linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MCTI). Founded in 1827, the National Observatory is the oldest Brazilian research institution in the areas of Astronomy, Geophysics and Metrology in Time and Frequency. Over these almost 200 years of existence, the National Observatory has been playing an important role in Brazilian science.

Currently, the Post-Graduation of the National Observatory consists of two Programs accredited by CAPES.

  • The Graduate Program in Astronomy at the National Observatory has a concept 6 from CAPES and its main objective is to complete and improve the training in astronomy of students graduated in the areas of Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics and related sciences, aiming at training highly qualified and professional researchers well prepared for the job market. The Program has two main areas of concentration: Astronomy and Astrophysics.
  • The Graduate Program in Geophysics at the National Observatory has a concept 5 from CAPES and aims to train highly qualified human resources in geophysics who can, in the future, act both in the academic area (research and teaching) and in the area of industries. mineral and oil. The program has two main areas of concentration: Applied Geophysics and Solid Earth Geophysics.

In addition, in order to awaken the scientific vocation and encourage the emergence of new potential talents among undergraduate students, the National Observatory maintains an Institutional Program for Scientific and Technological Initiation, financed with its own resources and CNPq's PIBIC and PIBITI programs , to stimulate the participation of students in research projects, preparing them for entry into graduate school and thus contributing to the reduction in the average time of master's and doctorate degrees and contributing to the formation of the full citizen, with conditions to participate in a creative and entrepreneurial way in your community.
