The number of new international market openings for Brazilian agricultural products reached its second-highest level on record in October. Over the past 31 days, 34 new opportunities were created across 12 countries, nearly matching the total for all of 2019, which saw 35 openings. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Ministério da Agricultura e Pecuária / MAPA), this performance was surpassed only by September, which set a record with 55 new markets across 14 countries.
Brazil achieved 192 market openings in 48 destinations over the last ten months alone. Since the beginning of 2023, the country has reached a total of 270 markets across 61 countries. The openings span several production chains, with emphasis on cotton lint and seed to Saudi Arabia; corn, sorghum, soybean, and brachiaria seeds for Gabon; setaria seeds for Colombia; cocoa beans and yerba mate to countries in the Eurasian Union (Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan); sheep and goat semen and embryos to Cuba; macadamia nuts to Japan; and sheep and goat meat to Qatar, among others.
SEEDS — The most recent authorization for Brazilian exports was announced on Friday, November 1. Colombia authorized the export of setaria seeds, a forage species for feeding beef cattle. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs [Ministério das Relações Exteriores / MRE].
Setaria seeds are known for their resistance, meeting the demands of producers interested in forage solutions that optimize productivity and sustainability in the livestock industry. In 2024, markets for coconut seeds and dried distillers grains had already been opened in Colombia. In 2023, Colombia represented a market worth USD 1.3 billion to Brazilian agricultural exports.
MAPA’s Secretary of Commerce and International Relations Luis Rua highlighted that the new market openings are a consequence of Brazil’s positive features.
“The opening of new markets is proof that Brazil has attributes that are in demand today, such as sanitarity, sustainability, competitiveness, and reliability of the sanitary services and the Brazilian production sector, recognized in more than 200 nations and territories,” he stated.
Luis Rua highlighted the collaborative effort between MAPA and MRE, in addition to the agricultural attachés who work in strategic positions. “This result is the fruit of the joint work of many, under the leadership of Ministers Carlos Fávaro and Mauro Vieira, with emphasis on our agricultural attachés in bilateral trade negotiations. More than 65% of the openings during this administration occurred in posts where we have attachés, and, with the expansion from 29 to 40 posts, many more records are certainly to come,” added the secretary.
RECORD — The expansion of international markets has been fundamental to the growth of Brazilian exports. In September, Brazilian agribusiness exports reached a record USD 14.19 billion in foreign sales, representing an increase of 3.6% compared to the same period in 2023. In the last twelve months, from October 2023 to September 2024, the sector's exports totaled USD 166.19 billion, registering an increase of 1.8% compared to the USD 163.19 billion exported in the previous 12 months.
