Brazil’s Lula discusses trade expansion with Nigerian President Tinubu

On Saturday afternoon, July 5, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the BRICS Summit. Nigeria is one of the group's ten partner countries.
During the meeting, the two leaders celebrated the outcome of Vice President Geraldo Alckmin's recent mission to Abuja, which highlighted the renewal of the Brazil-Nigeria Strategic Dialogue Mechanism. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, citing their nations' historical ties and shared development interests.
Expanding trade and reciprocal investments was a top priority of the meeting, given the size of their respective consumer markets and the potential of both the Brazilian and Nigerian economies.
Both presidents emphasized the importance of establishing direct air connections between their countries to boost tourism and business opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Nigerian leader presented his country's ongoing reform agenda, highlighting investment opportunities in infrastructure, energy, and fertilizer production. He emphasized Nigeria's desire to collaborate to boost the productivity of its agricultural sector and cited Embrapa as a model for agricultural research and innovation.
Throughout the meeting, projects related to energy transition, science, technology, innovation, and space observation were also discussed.
COP30 - President Lula reiterated his invitation for President Bola Tinubu to participate in COP30 in Belém. He also committed to holding a forum for Brazilian and Nigerian business leaders during the African leader's state visit to Brasília, scheduled for August of this year.
