Brazilian President attends Pope Francis' farewell mass in St. Peter's Square

On Saturday, April 26, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva attended the funeral of Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Square in Rome, Italy. The Funeral Mass was held before the Holy Father’s burial. According to the Vatican, at least 130 foreign delegations — including 50 heads of state and 10 monarchs — confirmed their attendance.
May God allow the next Pope to be like him — with the same heart, the same religious devotion, and the same commitment to fighting inequality that Pope Francis had. I return to Brazil certain that we have fulfilled our duty, as Christians, as people of faith, and as public servants, by attending the funeral of such an admirable figure as Pope Francis."

"Pope Francis was more than a pope. He was a feeling, he was a heart, he was a political leader. He cared not only about people's spirituality, but also about the war in Ukraine, the war in Gaza, hunger, and the struggles faced by people around the world. Therefore, I believe that our presence here is a way of expressing our gratitude — our gratitude to God, who allowed us to take part in the farewell of a man who left his mark on 21st century history," said President Lula in a conversation with journalists after the tribute to Pope Francis.
"May God allow the next Pope to be like him — with the same heart, the same religious devotion, and the same commitment to fighting inequality that Pope Francis had. I return to Brazil with the certainty that we have fulfilled our duty, as Christians, as people of faith, and as public servants, by attending the funeral of such an admirable figure as Pope Francis,” said Lula, who had attended the wake of the Holy Father in Saint Peter’s Basilica on Friday (25).
MOURNING — As soon as he heard about Pope Francis’ passing, on Monday (21), President Lula declared seven days of official mourning in Brazil and expressed his condolences. “Humankind has lost a voice of compassion and respect for others. Pope Francis lived and shared, in his daily life, the love, tolerance, and solidarity that are at the heart of Christian teachings."
