President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, 19, for a bilateral meeting in Rio de Janeiro at the Museum of Modern Art, where the G20 Leaders' Summit is taking place.

The president thanked Prime Minister Modi for joining the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty and congratulated him for organizing the G20 last year. Lula said that Brazil had learned much from the Indian experience when organizing the Rio Summit.

On the Brazilian side, the meeting was attended by ministers Mauro Vieira (Foreign Affairs), Fernando Haddad (Finance), Alexandre Silveira (Mines and Energy), Luciana Santos (Science and Technology), as well as by the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Trade, Márcio Elias Rosa.

President Lula spoke of his desire to visit India in 2025 — with a delegation from the government, the scientific community, and businesspeople — to expand relations between the two countries in sectors such as energy and pharmaceuticals, university exchanges, and technology transfer.

Prime Minister Modi said that India would be delighted to receive a visit from President Lula and his entourage next year and that he would also work towards a State visit to Brazil in 2025.

Modi praised the Brazilian presidency for continuing the work of the G20 and for making progress on issues on the group's agenda.

The presidents also discussed cooperation in the biofuels, defense, and aerospace sectors.
