High-level event: "In Defence of Democracy: Fighting Against Extremism"

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will promote the event "In Defence of Democracy: Fighting Against Extremism" on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting is scheduled for the afternoon of September 24 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Representatives from twenty countries have been invited, as well as the President of the European Council and the UN Secretary-General.

The meeting will feature a roundtable discussion where participants will explore strategies to strengthen democratic principles and protect institutions from extremist movements. The agenda will also address combating disinformation, hate speech, and violent extremism, eliminating all forms of inequality, and fostering sustainable, inclusive economic growth.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Spain and Brazil, as co-organizers, will publish a summary of the discussions.
