The fight against energy poverty advances in Brazil. Between January and March 2024, 9,803 families from seven states were benefited by the Luz Para Todos (or Light for Everyone) program run by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (Ministério de Minas e Energia/MME).

This means a direct benefit to 39,200 people. The total investment was BRL 228,299,414.87. The majority of new electricity connections were made in remote regions of the Legal Amazon, representing 70.92% of new consumers. The remainder (29.08%) were made in rural areas throughoutthe country.

“‘Luz Para Todos’ is back in full force. This is one of President Lula's great brands and we will serve 500,000 families by the end of 2026. Bringing electricity means generating jobs and income and giving dignity to Brazilians,” said Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira.

In the states of Amapá and Pará, connections were made remotely by installing individual solar energy kits. In the states of Acre, Bahia, Maranhão, Piauí and Rondônia, communities benefited from the extension of the network to rural areas.

Benefit

To rural worker Jaime Cardoso Correia, the solar energy kit was a blessing. A beneficiary of “Luz Para Todos” in the city of Breves, Pará, he says that, since he moved there 47 years ago, dependence on diesel generators was permanent. “We always dreamed of energy made available here. The connection was made five months ago and there have never been any problems. We are so grateful,” he said.

The goal for 2024 is to take electricity to 75,723 families across Brazil through the Growth Acceleration Program (Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento/New PAC). In 2023, the objectives were surpassed by 24%, and 64,592 consumer units were benefited.
