Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced today (26) that Brazil is to host the 30th UN Conference on Climate Change (COP 30). Belém, capital of the state of Pará, is going to harbor the November 2025 event.

If everyone’s talking about the Amazon, then why not hold the COP in an Amazon state so that they can find out more about it? About its rivers, its forests, its fauna? People get ready – because visitors from all over the world are coming, and they’ll be amazed by the city of Belém”

The confirmation of Brazil as host of the world’s most important climate event is the answer to a request made by Lula while taking part in Egypt's COP 27 last year, shortly after being elected president.

According to Lula, the Amazon Rainforest was the main topic of discussion at the Paris, Copenhagen and Sharm El-Sheikh conferences he attended – so he decided to suggest that COP 30 be held there so that people could get to know the forest and its riches.

“If everyone’s talking about the Amazon, then why not hold the COP in an Amazon state so that they can find out more about the region? About its rivers, its forests, its fauna? People get ready – because visitors from all over the world are coming, and they’ll be amazed by the city of Belém," said Lula.

UNPRECEDENTED – Brazil’s minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira confirmed that the UN had said yes to Belém during a meeting with president Lula and Pará state governor Helder Barbalho. “This will be the first time we’ll host a climate change event as important as this in Brazil and in the city of Belém,” he said.

THE SUMMIT – World leaders annually gather at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change – or COP – to discuss solutions to control global warming and create sustainable alternatives for life on Earth. This year's conference will be held in the United Arab Emirates. There is no venue confirmed for 2024 as yet.

PRIVILEGE – The governor of Pará said it was a great privilege for Brazil and Pará to host such an important event. “The state of Pará and the city of Belém are eager to receive everyone and working hard to organize a beautiful conference – to show that the Amazon is prepared to receive the whole world, and to advance sustainable development that favors the region.”

President Lula made the federal government available to the state to help with whatever may be necessary, and said he felt certain that visitors would be amazed by Belém. “The people of Pará are happy, festive and competent people, and I’m sure that Pará will delight the whole world. We’ll all work together to make this the best of all Climate Conferences,” said the president.
