Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke via videoconference this Thursday afternoon (2). The two leaders discussed the ongoing war and the pursuit of peace. President Zelensky recalled that Lula had already visited Ukraine (in 2004 and 2009) and invited the Brazilian president to come to Kyiv once again. Lula expressed his willingness to accept the invitation at an appropriate time, and also reciprocated it, saying he hoped that a return to peace would facilitate these meetings.

The Brazilian President also reiterated his willingness to help bring together a group of nations capable of talking with both sides of the conflict, so as to promote peace.

Lula highlighted that “Brazil defends Ukraine’s territorial integrity” – and that this is why it voted in favor of the recent UN resolution. He also mentioned conversations he had in this regard with the leaders of France, Germany and the US, as well as his willingness to talk with China, during his visit to Beijing, and with Russia.

The two leaders agreed to speak again in the near future.
