On Wednesday, January 22, the Brazilian government appointed Ambassador Mauricio Carvalho Lyrio, secretary for Economic and Financial Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs [Ministerio das Relações Exteriores/MRE), Brasil's new sherpa at BRICS. The appointment comes amid preparations for the activities of Brasil's presidency of the group, which began on January 1 this year.

According to an official statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mauricio Carvalho Lyrio now replaces Ambassador Eduardo Paes Saboia as the country's chief negotiator within BRICS. Lyrio will now be responsible for organizing the agenda of technical and ministerial meetings during Brasil’s presidency of the group, as well as the Leaders' Summit.

Ambassador Mauricio Lyrio’s diplomatic career is marked by extensive experience in international negotiations; now, he will be playing the same role he did in Brasil's presidency of the G20 in 2024.
