Types of Visa
GENERAL INFORMATION
- The purpose of the trip and the intended length of stay determine which visa will be required under Brazilian immigration law. There are two main types of visas: Visitor Visas (VIVIS) and Temporary Visas (VITEM).
- As shown in the table below, a VIVIS applies to a range of travel purposes for maximum stays of up to 90 days. For some of these purposes, if the intended stay exceeds 90 days, a VITEM must be requested. Temporary Visas are broken down into sub-categories (VITEM I to VITEM XIII), according to specific travel purposes and lengths of stay.
- Foreign nationals from countries with which Brazil holds visa exemption agreements benefit from Visitor Visa (VIVIS) waiver. Click here to check if you require a VIVIS or not.
- USA, Canada and Australia:
Citizens from U.S., Australia and Canada are required to have a visa to travel to Brazil for tourism or business. Applications can be submitted through the portal: https://brazil.vfsevisa.com/.
- VITEM holders must register with the Brazilian Federal Police within 90 days from first entry. Upon registration, the individual will have to present a document containing both parents’ full names (e.g. full birth certificate), which must be duly legalized / apostilled by the competent authority in the issuing country and subsequently translated into Portuguese by a sworn translator ("tradutor juramentado") in Brazil.
- Passports must be valid for the entire period the individual intends to remain in Brazil. No minimum passport validity is required.
- Visa applicants must meet all requirements to receive the category of visa to which they are applying. The Embassy may request additional information or documentation, as deemed necessary.
- Select a visa category from the table below to learn more and read the requirements.
- The Embassy's website is under construction. In the meantime, if you need to know the requirements for a specific type of visa which is not linked below, please send an e-mail to consular.talin@itamaraty.gov.br
