Impersonation of Brazilian Companies
Fraud Alert
The Embassy of Brazil in Singapore wishes to draw attention, for general information purposes, to recurring reports of fraud attempts involving individuals falsely claiming to represent Brazilian companies, particularly in the food and agribusiness sector (including poultry, pork, and beef).
Such schemes may involve unsolicited commercial approaches, the use of non-official email domains, or the impersonation of employees of established Brazilian exporters. In some instances, communications or payment requests may originate from jurisdictions other than Brazil, notwithstanding the use of Brazilian company names or branding.
Companies and individuals are encouraged to apply appropriate due-diligence measures and to exercise caution before engaging in any commercial transaction, including by considering the following non-exhaustive precautions:
- Commercial contacts should be initiated and conducted exclusively through the official institutional channels of the Brazilian company concerned.
- Email addresses and communication domains should be carefully reviewed. The use of free email services or domains that do not correspond to the company’s official website may constitute a risk indicator.
- Public information made available by Brazilian companies regarding their official communication channels may be consulted, where available, as part of standard verification procedures. Brazilian companies of all sizes, including trading companies, commonly maintain their own institutional websites, with corporate information and official contact details.
- The company’s CNPJ (Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Jurídica – Brazilian corporate tax identification number) associated with the transaction may be requested and independently verified through Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service.
- Particular caution is advisable in connection with unsolicited offers, especially those involving unusually favourable commercial terms, urgency for payment, requests for advance deposits, or demands for confidential or financial information at an early stage.
Verification Through Sectoral Associations
As part of their own internal verification processes, companies may additionaly consult information made publicly available by recognised Brazilian sectoral associations, including:
- Brazilian Chicken (poultry exporters): https://brazilianchicken.com.br/empresas-participantes/
- Brazilian Pork (pork exporters): https://brazilianpork.com.br/empresas-participantes/
- ABIEC – Brazilian Beef Exporters Association (beef exporters): https://abiec.com.br/en/members/
The Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) also maintains a general contact channel for inquiries related to poultry and pork exports: markets@abpa-br.org
