Diplomatic and Official Visas
Individuals traveling to Brazil on an official or diplomatic mission, representing a Foreign Government, Diplomatic Mission, or International Organization, must apply for a Diplomatic / Official / Visa at the Embassy.
Diplomatic Visas are issued to those on diplomatic missions to Brazil, either permanent or temporary, such as:
❖ Foreign authorities and Government officials with diplomatic status, representing a foreign Government recognized by the Brazilian Government, as well as their dependents
❖ Foreign authorities and officials with diplomatic status, representing an International Organization recognized by the Brazilian Government, as well as their dependents
- Applicants for Official or Diplomatic Visa must provide:
- Original official or diplomatic passport (signed, with at least 2 visa blank pages)
- Individuals traveling to Brazil on an official mission with an International Organization (e.g. World Bank, Pan-American Health Organization, InterAmerican Development Bank, etc.) must present their laissez-passer. Otherwise, the Diplomatic Note (see below) must explicitly justify why the individual is applying with a passport of his or her nationality.
Official Visas are issued to those on official missions to Brazil, either permanent or temporary, such as:
❖ Foreign authorities and administrative officials, representing a foreign Government recognized by the Brazilian Government, as well as their dependents;
❖ Foreign authorities and administrative officials, representing an International Organization recognized by the Brazilian Government, as well as their dependents;
❖ Students, trainees, officials or representatives of institutions of recognized economic, cultural or scientific relevance of international scope, such as:
- Scientific and cultural missions under an International Agreement; Technical assistance missions carried out under agreements that explicitly allow VISOF to technicians, experts and cooperators;
- Cooperation missions with Brazilian Government agencies; Military students to attend a course at the Brazilian Armed Forces Academies.
Step by Step
Register online to obtain a Protocol Number at

- Click on VISA. Fill in the online form and upload ALL supporting documents.
- Click on SUBMIT to receive your processing number and receipt (Visa Request Form Receipt - RER).
- Print the receipt (Visa Request Form Receipt - RER). The application form completed (filled-in) online is valid for ONE month only.
- Attach one (01) recent individual 3x4 size photograph, in color, front view, full face and white background.
- Sign the receipt in the box provided.
- Bring to the Consular Section of the Embassy the duly completed and signed receipt, together with the original documentation and passport. Submissions are done from Monday to Friday, between 9am and 1pm.
Requirements
- Passport photo (3x 4, (white background)
- Diplomatic Note/Note Verbale containing the following information:
- Full name and profession/position/title of the applicant;
- Government department, agency and/or institution -applicant will be representing;
- Passport type, number, and country of issue;
- Details of the applicant’s assignment/work in Brazil;
- Date of arrival and duration of stay in Brazil;
- Location the applicant will work in Brazil;
- Entity or person to be contacted in Brazil
- ticket reservation or booked itinerary reservation or letter from a travel agent under applicant’s name, with complete itinerary, flight number and arrival/departure dates and reservation code provided by the airline company;
- Hotel reservation (name, address & telephone number) or name and address of intended accommodation;
[NOTE: You should never pay for travel arrangements (e.g., airfare, hotels) without having the necessary visa.
Processing time is 5 working days from receipt of documents.
Opening days/hours to the public: Monday- Friday, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, except on public holidays.
