CPF for foreigners - Renewal
Step-by-Step Guide
Throughout 2025 all CPFs belonging to foreigners must be renewed. This procedure must be repeated annually by CPF holders residing abroad. The update process should be completed via the Brazilian Federal Revenue’s official mobile app, available for both Android and iOS platforms:

- Download the “Receita Federal” app to your smartphone;
- Open the app, select “Outros Serviços” and click on “Atualizar CPF no Exterior” ;
- Enter your CPF number and your date of birth;
- Use the app to take a photo of your face along with your passport (displaying the page with your personal details and photo).;
- Fill in the required information as requested by the app.
To successfully reregister your CPF, you must follow these steps precisely. Ensure you have all necessary information and documents ready.
If You Are Unable to Renewal Your CPF via the App
If your CPF cannot be updated due to discrepancies in the app, you will need to schedule an appointment at the Brazilian Embassy’s Consular Section under the service titled “CPF para estrangeiros - Recadastramento / CPF for foreigners - Renewal” through the e-consular platform.
Once the request is submitted via the e-consular platform, please allow a few days for the Consular Section to validate your application. After receiving confirmation, you can schedule an in-person appointment through the same platform to complete the process.
In-Person Appointment
The CPF holder must attend the appointment in person. Proxy requests will not be accepted. Additionally, there is no requirement for a Brazilian citizen to accompany the applicant during the appointment.
On the day of your appointment, you must present the following:
- A screenshot of the error message displayed during the failed attempt to renew one’s CPF;
- One of the following documents:
- A valid and original passport (expired or copied passports will not be accepted);
- Carteira de Registro Nacional Migratório (CRNM) (“National Migratory Registration Certificate”) or the old Cédula de Identidade de Estrangeiro (CIE/RNE) (“Foreign Identity Card”);
- Any additional documents requested through the e-consular platform to verify your CPF data (e.g., birth certificate).
Attention:
If your CPF is irregular or needs other updates, you must contact the Federal Revenue directly via email: cpf.residente.exterior@rfb.gov.br.
