Statement by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations, Ambassador Norberto Moretti, at the Interactive Dialogue of the Group of Friends on Gender Parity with the President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock - November 19th, 2025
Madam President, Co-Chairs, distinguished colleagues
This year, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. However, we see unprecedented attacks on the principles and commitments agreed upon three decades ago.
Setbacks to women’s rights are no longer a risk. They are here upon us and must be resisted. We must continue advancing towards gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, ensuring the full enjoyment of their human rights. The cross-cutting nature of gender equality is a guideline in the development of public policies.
Against this background, as we gather here today under the Group of Friends of Gender Parity, which brings together over 150 delegations, we are reminded of our shared commitment to the promotion of gender equality. We must also translate such commitment in actual negotiations, in particular in the Third Committee.
From Brazil’s perspective, gender parity is a key component of gender equality, as it ensures equal access to opportunities, conditions, employment, education, as well as equal representation of women in political and economic power.
It is time to say loud and clear that the much-needed reform of global governance must include gender parity in decision-making bodies, including in the leadership of the United Nations. As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Organization, we are fortunate to be presided over by a woman, but only the fifth woman in history to occupy the position. It is long past time for us to see the appointment of the first woman to serve as Secretary-General, one from the Latin American and Caribbean Group.
I thank you.
