Who can apply for a passport at the Consulate General of Brazil in Washington?
The Consulate General of Brazil in Washington issues passports to Brazilian citizens residing in the following U.S. states and territories under its jurisdiction:
- District of Columbia
- North Carolina
- Delaware
- Kentucky
- Maryland
- Ohio
- Virginia
- West Virginia
- U.S. military bases (except Guam)
Brazilians residing in other U.S. states should apply for a passport at the Consulate responsible for their state of residence.
How to Apply for a Passport?
1. Gather the original documents required for passport issuance. (See the tables below.)
2. Submit photographs or scans of the original documents for validation in the e-consular system.
3. Once the original documents have been validated in the e-consular system, schedule an in-person appointment or choose the "Send by mail" option.as tabelas abaixo.)

For name change due to divorce, provide a Brazilian marriage certificate with the divorce annotation or a RG (identity card) issued from a Brazilian marriage certificate with the divorce annotation. Note: The Consulate does not perform divorces and cannot accept foreign divorces for passport name changes. |

The passport fee for adults is US$120.00. The only accepted payment method is a Postal Money Order, purchased from any U.S. Post Office. Money Orders from other institutions are not accepted. Fill in the “From” field with the passport holder’s name, and “Pay to” as Consulate General of Brazil. |

For mail-in applications, provide a flat-rate envelope (Priority or Priority Express Mail), with enough postage and a tracking number. Fill in your name and address in the “TO:” field. The return envelope may be folded and must fit inside the envelope sent to the Consulate. Each envelope may contain up to six passports. |

Authorization to Issue Passport for Minor |
Print the Authorization for Issuing a Minor's Passport. Options: (2) If one parent in the U.S. cannot attend, they must sign in front of a U.S. notary public; (3) If one parent resides in another country, the signature must be notarized at a Brazilian notary office (if in Brazil) or apostilled/legalized (if in a third country). In this case, after authenticating the signature, they must send the printed Authorization, with the authenticated signature, by mail to the passport applicant. Photocopies of the Authorization are not accepted.; (4) Electronic signatures and electronic notarizations are not accepted. Signatures and notarizations must appear physically on the printed Authorization form; (5) The signatures of both parents are required, even in cases where only one parent has custody of the minor, except when the custody ruling explicitly authorizes the issuance of the passport without the consent of the other parente; (6) If only one parent is listed on the minor's Brazilian birth certificate, only that parent’s signature is required on the Authorization form; (7) If one of the parents is deceased, the original death certificate must be presented; (8) If one of the parents is of unknown whereabouts, the other parent must obtain a court order authorizing them to request the minor’s passport alone; (9) If a public power of attorney (issued at a notary office or Brazilian consulate) is presented authorizing one parent to request the passport on behalf of the minor, the document must include the following information: - Full names of the minor and both parentes (10) Cases involving custody and court decisions will be reviewed individually. The original court-issued document must be presented. |

Brazilian parents must present original Brazilian ID with photo and signature. Foreign parents must present a valid passport or U.S. driver’s license. If a parent changed their name after the child's birth, provide proof (e.g., marriage certificate). If a parent is deceased, provide the original death certificate. If one parent is abroad, a certified copy (notarized in Brazil or apostilled if from another country) is required. |

How to submit the required documents for validation in the e-consular system?
- Create an account in the e-consular system of the Consulate General of Brazil in Washington. You can access the system using your CPF through the GOV.BR platform, or by creating an account with your email (the option is at the bottom of the e-consular homepage).
- Once logged in, start a passport service request (for adults or minors, depending on the applicant’s age).
- Attach a photograph or scan of each required original document at each step of the service request.
- Click “Confirm and submit” at the end of the application.
- The documents will be reviewed within up to 10 business days.
My service request in the e-consular system has been reviewed by the Consulate. What should I do now?
Log back into the e-consular system and access your consular services page.
If the passport service status is “Action required by applicant”, click “Continue” to make the requested corrections. You will be directed only to the fields that need correction. The reason for each correction will appear in an orange box below the relevant field.
If the passport service status is “Validated, action required by applicant”, click “Continue” to schedule an in-person appointment.
If you prefer to complete the service by mail, click "Send by mail".
I sent my documents to the Consulate by mail. How long will it take to receive my passport and documents back?
Currently, the Consulate issues passports requested by mail within up to 15 business days after receiving the documents.
Delivery time depends on the type of envelope used for sending and returning.
It is recommended that applicants keep the tracking numbers for both envelopes to monitor shipping status.
The Consulate is not responsible for delays or loss of documents by the postal service.

The Consulate General of Brazil in Washington does not provide service by phone.
Passport Validity Periods
For Applicants OVER 18 Years Old:
The standard validity period is 10 years.
If the new passport is issued to replace a still-valid passport that cannot be physically presented for cancellation (due to loss, theft, being held by foreign authorities, etc.), the new passport will be valid for up to 4 years.
Repeated cases of failure to present the previous valid passport may result in even shorter validity periods: 2 years, 1 year, or as little as 7 months.
If the new passport replaces an already expired passport, it will be valid for 10 years, regardless of whether the previous passport is presented.
For Applicants UNDER 18 Years Old:
The validity of the new passport is determined by the applicant’s age at the time of issuance:
- Age 0 to 1 year: 1 year validity
- Age 1 to 2 years: 2 years validity
- Age 2 to 3 years: 3 years validity
- Age 3 to 4 years: 4 years validity
- Age 4 to 17 years: 5 years validity
If the new passport replaces a still-valid passport that cannot be presented for cancellation (due to loss, theft, etc.), the validity will be:
- 4 years (for applicants aged 4–17)
- 7 months (only in repeat cases for applicants aged 0–3)
